ON VACATION
Hard to believe, isn't it? Sure, I've had the pleasure of traveling to some really nice places, but it's always been work-related. And yes, I always have fun on the road (See ILLUSTRATION NATION) but I'm usually on a business mission, so here I am finally taking a dream vacation. Somewhere tropical... A nice all-inclusive resort where Alley and I can be pampered for an entire week... A little place called CANCUN, MEXICO Baby!

My first REAL vacation! An entire week with no work. I'm actually a little nervous. Like, if I don't have anything in front of me to be productive, like, I might start doing caricatures of other guests on the beach or something. But I think it'll be good for me...

White sand. Crystal blue water. Non-stop margaritas. Non-stop food. Non-stop dessert. Personal massages. Exotic shopping. Mayan ruin tours. Scuba. Naps under the sun. Dancing the night away. And a New Year's Eve on the beach under a Mexican Moon. Yeah... I've earned this.

So I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year now, since I won't be back until next week. But I also wanted to take the time to reflect on 2008 and look ahead to 2009. It's kind of a self-indulgent thing that sometimes families and business do to let everyone know what they've been up to at-a-glance. I always enjoy reading these, but if you don't, have a Happy New Year and click somewhere else. Otherwise, here's my year:

January 2008 started with a bang, as my web designer (Paul Michael Kane) and I kicked it off with a brand new version of MattBusch.com. If you haven't been there in a while, you should. Lots to see and do. I also illustrated the cover to a book called WALT DISNEY: The American Dreamer, and wrote a 12 page article for ART SCENE INTERNATIONAL Magazine, detailing how I illustrated the STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH Style D One Sheet Movie Poster. As well, I returned to teaching (I'm a professor at Macomb College) after a year-long hiatus.

Much of February and March was spent illustrating trading cards and sketch cards based on the TV show HEROES, LORD OF THE RINGS Masterpieces 2 and INDIANA JONES Heritage sets. The first of 7 brand new Season 2 How To Draw STAR WARS episodes were released Online. It was also announced that Tobey Maguire would be starring in the upcoming movie AFTERBURN, based on a comic book that I illustrate all the covers for.

In April and May I started a 3 part How To Draw Manga tutorial series for StarWars.com. The <http://www.mattbusch.com/rotj.htm">25th Anniversary poster I illustrated for RETURN OF THE JEDI</a> was also released, and I was a guest on the White Zombie episode of the TV show NIGHTMARE SINEMA.

In June, as new episodes of How To Draw STAR WARS were continually released, I also made a new video showing how I illustrate covers for AFTERBURN, and I was a guest speaker at the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival.

July was easily the biggest month in the history of, well... Me. My new Artbook, THE WORLDS FO MATT BUSCH was released, to which I also produced a parody Infomercial for. Volume 2 of YOU CAN DRAW STAR WARS was released on DVD. I was a Featured Special Guest at Comic-Con International in San Diego. And, um, oh yeah- I WENT TO JAPAN! What an incredible experience that was!

In August, Version 2.0 of my official German Website was released. I was also a guest on the Canadian TV show The COMIC BOOK SYNDICATE, and my art was licensed for usage for the SIMS video game.

September and October were spent putting the final touches on my documentary, but I also went to Texas to sign the CLONE WARS poster I illustrated, based on the new STAR WARS CARTOON movie / TV Show.

In November, I became the worlds first 501st Honorary Member to get their armor- becoming an actual Stormtrooper: TK3477! It's also when ILLUSTRATION NATION made it's theatrical debut, which you can expect to see on DVD at some point next year.

This month, a STAR WARS character I somewhat created and was named after me was turned into an action figure from Hasbro! Currently on my desk, a plethora of art for HARD ROCK CAFE.

Phew. Exhausting. I guess I do need a vacation.

Anyway, I'm outta here. See y'all next year. Have a safe holiday and may 2009 be fun and prospurous for us all. We've got some new leadership and all kinds of changes and sacrifices to make. Let's hope that things are done going down and can bounce back up for a change.

Peace, Love, and Energy Drinks,

Matt!

Got mine at a place here in Detroit called SHOWTIME. I also saw a girl with one in Japan, but that's the only 2 places I've seen. :)

A week with no work? In my experience, the first two days will be pleasant, but by the third you'll be a little stir crazy.
